Gardeners Arkley Health and Safety Policy

Gardeners Arkley is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to preventing accidents, protecting the environment in which we work, and promoting a culture of safety and responsibility in all gardening activities.

Policy Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of this policy is to ensure that all gardening and maintenance work undertaken by Gardeners Arkley is planned and carried out safely, with due consideration for people, property and the surrounding environment. Our objectives are to:

Identify, assess and control risks associated with gardening tasks such as hedge cutting, mowing, planting, pruning, landscaping and use of machinery. Provide clear guidance to staff and contractors on safe working practices. Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. Promote ongoing awareness, training and supervision so that safety is integral to our daily operations.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Gardeners Arkley accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance. This includes:

Implementing and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy on a regular basis to ensure it remains effective and up to date. Providing suitable resources, equipment and training to enable safe working practices. Ensuring that risk assessments are completed for routine and non-routine gardening tasks, and that appropriate control measures are implemented.

Managers and supervisors will monitor work on site, check that agreed safety procedures are followed, and address any unsafe behaviours or conditions without delay.

Employee and Contractor Responsibilities

All employees and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Arkley share the responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions. They are required to:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety, and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Follow all safety instructions, procedures and site rules provided by Gardeners Arkley and by the client where applicable. Use machinery, tools, ladders and personal protective equipment correctly, and only for their intended purpose.

Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards and defective equipment to their supervisor as soon as reasonably practicable. Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that could impair their judgment or ability to work safely.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Gardeners Arkley will carry out proportionate risk assessments for gardening and grounds maintenance activities, including but not limited to grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work within our competence, planting, weed control and general site clearance. These risk assessments will consider:

The nature of the task and equipment required. Ground conditions, gradients and weather. Proximity to roads, footpaths, neighbouring properties, utilities and overhead services. Risks to staff, clients, visitors and the general public.

Safe systems of work will be developed from these assessments and communicated to all relevant personnel. Where new methods, tools or products are introduced, the associated risks will be reviewed and control measures updated accordingly.

Use of Machinery, Tools and Equipment

Gardeners Arkley will ensure that all machinery, tools and equipment used in the course of gardening work are suitable for the task, well maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Operators will only use equipment for which they are trained and, where required, specifically authorised.

Guards, safety devices and emergency stop features will not be removed, bypassed or disabled. Hand tools will be kept in good condition and stored safely when not in use. Power tools and machinery will be shut down and secured when left unattended. Refuelling and maintenance will be undertaken safely and in line with manufacturer guidance.

Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be sufficiently controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection.

Employees and contractors must wear the PPE specified for their tasks, take care of it, and report any loss or damage so that it can be repaired or replaced. PPE is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safe systems of work.

Public Safety and Site Management

When working at client premises, Gardeners Arkley will take reasonable steps to protect members of the public and other site users from harm. This includes:

Planning access and egress routes for vehicles and machinery. Using warning signs, cones or barriers where appropriate to separate work areas from public areas. Scheduling high-risk tasks to minimise interaction with pedestrians and other on-site activities.

Tools, materials and waste will be stored or stacked safely so they do not create tripping or other hazards. Work areas will be kept as tidy as reasonably practicable during operations and left in a safe condition on completion.

Chemical and Product Safety

Where Gardeners Arkley uses horticultural products such as fertilisers or approved weed control substances, these will be stored, transported, mixed and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data. Only trained personnel will handle such products.

Exposure to staff, clients, pets, wildlife and the wider environment will be minimised through careful selection and controlled application. Containers will be clearly labelled and disposed of responsibly.

Training, Information and Supervision

Gardeners Arkley will provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to enable employees and contractors to work safely and competently. Induction training will cover core health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures and relevant site rules.

Task-specific training will be provided for the safe use of equipment, handling of materials and implementation of safe systems of work. Refresher training will be given when necessary, for example when new tools, methods or regulations are introduced.

Incident Reporting and Policy Review

All accidents, incidents and near misses will be recorded and, where appropriate, investigated to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Lessons learned will be used to improve working practices and update risk assessments.

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur in our operations, equipment or legal requirements.
